How to Close a Browser With Missing Menu Bar

January 23, 2012

Beats Me

Your browser menu bars sometimes disappear. This can occur because of a bug in the system, a popup window alters your settings, or because your browser goes into full-screen mode. Whatever the reason, you can restore your browser’s menu bars by pressing certain keys on the keyboard. These methods are called “keyboard shortcuts.” They come in very handy when your browser goes wonky or your wireless mouse suddenly loses battery power.

You can use one of three methods to close your browser. The “Long Way” uses a handful of keystrokes and is very useful when you have to save a webpage or do something else before closing the browser. The “Fast Way” closes the browser immediately. The “Task Manager” method should be used when the browser freezes or is not responding.

Close the Browser The Long Way

1. Press F11 to exit Full-Screen mode, if this applies.

2. Press F10 to expose the hiding menu bar.

3. Press the “down arrow” key on the keyboard one time to expose the “File” menu. Press the “up arrow” key one time to select the “Exit” choice in the menu. Press “Enter” on the keyboard. The browser will close immediately.

Close the Browser the Fast Way

1. Simultaneously press “Alt” and F4 on your keyboard. The browser will immediately close.

Use Task Manager When the Browser is “Not Responding”

1. Simultaneously press “Ctrl,” “Alt,” and “Delete” on the keyboard. This will activate the Windows Task Manager.

2. Click the “Processes” tab. Click the “Image Name” column to sort your tasks in alphabetical order.

3. Look for your browser application. For Internet Explorer, it will appear as iexplorer.exe. Firefox will show as firefox.exe. Click the name one time to highlight it.

4. Click the button “End Process” at the bottom right side of the Task Manager application. Click “End process” in the confirmation window.

That’s it! Pass yourself a cigar, you did famously. :)
