Fixing Bookmark Problems in Opera Browser

Software Problems

A reader named Martin sent me in a question:

Any ideas why opera browser suddenly will not allow bookmarks to be saved, and any idea how to correct this?

Martin, it sounds like you have a corrupt opera6.adr file or a corrupt bookmarks.adr file (depends on your Opera version and if your Opera uses imported bookmarks from another browser). The opera6.adr file is the bookmark file in the Opera browser. I hoped you saved your bookmarks, just in case!

You can try this fix.

How to Restore Corrupted Bookmarks in Opera

1. Open your Opera browser. Go to Help > About.

2. Look in the section named “Paths.” Look under bookmarks. This is the directory where your Opera bookmarks file is stored in your computer. You can see that my bookmarks are stored in this directory: “C:UsersRebeccaAppDataRoamingOperaOperabookmarks.adr.” Yours should be similar; it may be listed as opera6.adr, it just depends. Remember where it is (which directory).

3. Close Opera.

4. Go to the directory in your computer.

5. Look for a file opera6.adr.bak.

6. Right-click it and choose “copy.” Go to your desktop and right-click on an empty space. Choose “paste” from the menu. The file should appear on your Desktop. This is to keep a copy of the file safe while you try to fix the file in your Opera directory.

7. Go back to the Opera directory. Look for the file opera6.adr and right-click it. Choose Rename. Rename the file to opera6corrupt.adr.

8. Go back to the directory and look for opera6.adr.bak. Rename it to opera6.adr.

9. Open the Opera browser. Check to see if your bookmarks are restored and working.

10. If this resolves the problem, you can delete the copy of the opera6.adr.bak that you made on your Desktop.

It’s always a very good idea to backup bookmarks regularly. In Opera, you can do this by exporting them into a file, to a place on your computer hard drive for safe-keeping (I keep mine in my Documents folder).

How to Save Bookmarks in Opera

1. Open Opera. (I have Opera 10.10; your version may differ the process slightly).

2. Go to Bookmarks > Manage Bookmarks.

3. Below the tabs, you will see a few icons. Click the “File” icon. Choose “Export as HTML.” This will enable you to open your bookmarks in other browsers, such as Firefox or Internet Explorer, as well as using them in Opera. Alternatively, you can also click “Export Opera Bookmarks.” This will save the bookmarks in a special file format that only Opera can read. I usually export my bookmarks to HTML file.

4. In the dialog window that appears, choose the location where you want to save the file. Click “Save.”

5. That’s it! Your bookmarks are saved. You can use the same process to restore the bookmarks should you ever need to; just use the “import” feature in Opera (or any other browser).

How does one edit those paths? For some reason my bookmark path is pointing at E:opera6.adr, but I don’t have an E: drive, so I’m getting errors from Opera when I try to save a bookmark.

Hi, Joshua. Most computers have “C:” as their main hard drive. Yours may be listed as “E,” unless you have Opera installed on an external hard drive or a partition drive? This may be why Opera bookmarks are not writing to your drive. On which drive are your main Opera program files located?

My hard drive is partitioned into a C: and a D:. Opera is installed on C:. There is no E:.

I found the necessary .ini file to edit to change the Bookmarks path, but whatever folder I set it to, on either C: or D:, when I try to save a Bookmark, I get the pop-up error message “Saving Failed. Could not save file. C:Opera (or whatever I’ve set it to in the .ini file) Try Again?”

You have to go to menu > bookmarks > manage bookmarks > Add > New Bookmark then fill in name and url and select folder to save in. Kind of a PITA but actually only takes half a minute once you get used to it.
